LEARN TO SWIM COURSE INFORMATION AND OUTLINE
NB WATERMANSHIP MUST BE DONE BEFORE THE CANDIDATES PAY FOR THE COURSE.
INTRODUCTION
The LTS course forms the base of all aquatic disciplines. The manual covers topics deemed necessary for teaching water familiarization, floating, principles of movement in water, entries, exists and introduction to efficient stroke development. Candidates who meet all the assessment requirements will be declared competent as LTS instructors. Their role will be to impart essential water safety knowledge and to teach swimming to South Africans, aiming to reduce aquatic accidents and eradicate drowning incidents in the different communities.
The following are prerequisites for the course:
- Must be 18+ years of age
- Grade 11 pass is recommended
- Candidate risk assessment declaration must be completed
- Watermanship – is the process of testing swimming skills and competency of all candidates that enroll for any of the SSA aquatic disciplines. It includes various strokes, water safety techniques and the ability to help others in distress.
- These documents must be submitted with the final POE
- Certified ID copy (date stamp not older than 6 months)
- Full Police/Name Clearance
- Valid Level 1st Aid Certificate
Watermanship assessment must be conducted and signed off before candidates purchase the course.
- Watermanship video must be uploaded on the DQS portal which will be assessed by the mentor facilitator. If declared competent a candidate will proceed with the course.
- Candidates must be able to swim at least 25m back survival, 25m side survival and 25m of any World Aquatics recognised stroke. It is required that a candidate swim these strokes continuously without stopping. A candidate must also be able to swim underwater & retrieve an object (from the wall to 5 m flags).

ACCESS TO THE LEARN TO SWIM COURSE
STEP 1
- Login to the SSA website (swimsa.org ) - Navigate to SSA online learning which will lead you to the DQS portal.
- Read course requirements and record Watermanship following the above guidelines
- Purchase the course
- Upload Watermanship and all the other pre-requisites
STEP 2
- After verification learners must download the learner guide and the power point presentation.
- A mentor facilitator is allocated, and candidates can schedule an appointment for support and guidance.
- An LTS course worksheet must be completed and assessed by the mentor facilitator
- After the candidate is declared competent, they will have access to the theory exam.
- After candidates are declared competent on their theory exam, they must log hours, then do their final practical assessment.
- The course must be completed within 12 months, and this includes theory work and the practical assessment.
- NB If candidates do not complete within the stipulated timeframe, they will be expected to pay an additional license fee.

- Please note the safeguarding awareness and appropriate touch workshops must be completed before the first registration, after completion of your course.
- There might be other workshops added annually.

Assessments
- Assessment for this course will include formative, summative and workplace assessment (all must be included in the portfolio of evidence)
- Pass a written exam by 60% which includes multiple choice and short questions.
- Logging 20 hours with an SSA accredited and registered instructor. Use link to contact the provincial coordinate to accredited instructors if you don’t know any in your area.

- NOTE for both the theory exam and practical assessment candidates will be given the second opportunity if they are declared not yet competent the first time.
