The World Bank estimates that over USD 1 trillion is paid in bribes each year, with disastrous impacts on countries such as eroding political stability, economic decline, increasing the cost of
business, loss of revenue, and contributing to poverty.

On a global level, Bribery and Corruption has a serious effect on the expected functionality of governments, and is a significant barrier to international trade, while within an organisation
it has a negative impact on working capital, company reputation, share price valuation, long and short-term good standing, and employee morale.

Many governments have taken measures to address Bribery through national legislation as well as international agreements such as the United Nations Convention against Corruption,
but more must be done, on a national, individual and corporate level. Institutional change and an Anti-Bribery culture within an organisation will contribute significantly to the fight against Bribery and compliment national and international measures and proven best-practices.

An Anti-Bribery management system is designed to instil an Anti-Bribery culture within an organisation and implement appropriate controls, which will in turn increase the chance
of detecting Bribery and reduce its incidence thereof.

  • ISO 37001 is designed to help your organisation implement an Anti-Bribery management system or enhance the controls you currently have. It requires implementing a series
of measures such as adopting an Anti-Bribery policy, appointing someone to oversee compliance with that policy, vetting and training employees, undertaking risk assessments
on projects and business associates, implementing financial and commercial controls, and instituting reporting and investigation procedures.
  • Implementing an Anti-Bribery management system requires leadership and input from the Board, Directors and Senior management, and the policy and programme must be
communicated to all staff and external parties such as contractors, suppliers and joint-venture partners.
  • In this way, ISO 37001 helps to reduce the risk of Bribery and Corruption occurring and can demonstrate to your management, employees, owners, funders, customers and
other business associates that you have put in place internationally recognised best-practice Anti-Bribery and Anti-Corruption controls. It also provides evidence in the event of a criminal investigation that you have taken reasonable
steps to prevent Bribery and Corruption.

The Anti-Bribery Management System Self-assessment tool will give you confidence in your anti-bribery management policies and processes in alignment with the latest requirements introduced with the recent publishing of ISO 37001:2016. It will allow you to assess your ABMS management system and draw conclusions on your compliance or gaps with the requirements and structure of ISO 37001:2016.
