What is the SSA Bridging Course?
The SSA Bridging Course is designed for candidates interested in following the coaching pathway but not intending to teach swimming at this stage.
This course provides access to the Level 1 Coaching Course for candidates who do not yet hold a valid Learn to Swim (LTS) certificate. Please note this is not a qualification but a pathway to further training.
Candidates will learn the basics of swimming and important coaching-related skills to better prepare for their coaching journey.
Pre-Requisites for Enrolment
Before starting the Bridging Course, candidates must meet the following:

Be 18 years or older.

Have passed Grade 11.

Complete the Watermanship Assessment Video.

Upload a certified copy of your ID.

Upload a signed Candidate Risk Assessment Declaration.
A. Watermanship Assessment Video
Watermanship tests your swimming skills and competency, including a range of strokes and aquatic safety techniques.
Your video must demonstrate the following:

25m of any World Aquatics-recognized stroke (front crawl, breaststroke, backstroke, or butterfly)

Underwater swim and retrieval of an object (from the wall to the 5m flags)
Important:

Swim continuously without stopping.

Video format must be MP4 and not exceed 512MB.
How to Complete the Watermanship Assessment
- Complete the Candidate Section of the Watermanship document (download link provided).
- Record your Watermanship Video following the above criteria.
- Purchase the Bridging Course on the SSA/DQS portal to gain access to the upload section.
- Upload your Watermanship Video, Candidate Section document, certified ID, and Risk Assessment Declaration via the course dashboard.
- An SSA Mentor Facilitator will assess your submission.

If declared competent, you will proceed with the Bridging Course.

If not yet competent, you will be allowed to submit a second assessment video.

Multiple-choice exam (pass mark 70%).

Candidates not meeting competency will have the opportunity to retake the exam.

It serves solely as a pathway to the Level 1 Coaching Course.
How to Access the Bridging Course
- Visit the SSA website at swimsa.org and navigate to the SSA Online Learning portal.
- Read the course requirements and prepare your Watermanship assessment.
- Purchase the Bridging Course to unlock the upload section.
- Upload your Watermanship video and required documents for assessment.
- Once assessed and declared competent, download the learner guide, attend mentor sessions if needed, complete the worksheet, and write the exam.
