Module A — AA1000 Stakeholder Engagement Practitioner Certificate
Give your team the skills to engage stakeholders with purpose — and turn dialogue into measurable business value.
Stakeholder trust is the foundation of every credible sustainability programme. Regulators, investors, and communities increasingly expect organisations to show not only that they engage their stakeholders, but that they do so systematically, transparently, and with real influence on decision-making. This practitioner-level online course gives your people a complete, practical grounding in the world's leading stakeholder engagement framework: the AccountAbility AA1000 Series.
Built around the AA1000 AccountAbility Principles (AA1000AP 2018) and the AA1000 Stakeholder Engagement Standard, the course takes learners step by step through the full engagement lifecycle — from securing board-level commitment to planning, preparing, implementing, and reviewing engagements that deliver agreed outcomes. It has also been fully updated for AA1000SES v3 readiness, covering the incoming standard's shift to "4th Generation" engagement co-creation and impact. Its key updates on two-way dialogue, digital platforms and AI, and its expected launch timeline, so your team is prepared before the new standard even lands.
Who it's for Sustainability, ESG, CSR, and communications professionals; management system practitioners; and anyone responsible for planning or running stakeholder engagement. Module A is the entry point to the AA1000 practitioner pathway. No prior AA1000 knowledge is required.
What learners will be able to do By the end of the course, learners will be able to:
- Explain the AA1000 Series and the four AccountAbility Principles — Inclusivity, Materiality, Responsiveness, and Impact
- Describe what is new in the AA1000AP (2018), including Impact as the fourth principle
- Embed stakeholder engagement into organisational governance, strategy, and day-to-day operations
- Define the purpose, scope, mandate, and ownership of an engagement and systematically identify stakeholders
- Plan, prepare, implement, and review engagements using the standard's four-stage process
- Select the right engagement level — from inform and consult through to collaborate and empower — and set clear boundaries of disclosure
- Manage engagement risks, build stakeholder capacity, and resolve conflict constructively
- Measure outputs, outcomes, and impact, and report publicly on engagement
- Understand what changes under AA1000SES v3 and how to prepare for the transition
Course structure The course moves from foundations to full process mastery: an introduction to the AA1000 Series and AccountAbility; the AA1000AP (2018) principles; what's new in AA1000SES v3 (the four generations of engagement, key updates, and supporting resources); commitment and integration; purpose, scope, and stakeholder identification; and the complete engagement process — plan, prepare, implement, and act, review and improve — brought to life with case scenarios, stakeholder mapping tools, and a real DQS case study. Learning is confirmed with a final quiz (75% pass mark).
How learners engage Built for retention, not just completion: clear explanations, interactive knowledge checks, flashcard-style key terms, real-world case scenarios, and practical tools such as the stakeholder influence–interest grid keep the content immediately applicable to learners' own organisations.
Why it matters for your organisation Quality stakeholder engagement reduces risk, strengthens reputation, surfaces emerging issues early, and produces the evidence base that underpins credible materiality assessments, sustainability reports, and assurance. Module A is also the first step on the certification pathway: together with Modules B and C, it leads to the Associate Certified Sustainability Assurance Practitioner Certificate.
